2018 Tentative Division A Event List The events listed below are the events tentatively planned for the 2018 Elementary Science Olympiad. A description of each event is found in either the Elementary Science Olympiad Coaches Manual or is provided as an addendum to the manual. Each registered team is expected to purchase an Elementary Science Olympiad Rules Manual from the National Science Olympiad website: www.soinc.org.

Event Times: All events will be completed in 30-minute time blocks, unless otherwise noted in the schedule. In all cases, the schedule will take precedence over the time suggested in the Elementary Science Olympiad Rules Manual.

Important: A maximum of up to fifteen (15) students may participate on each team the day of the Science Olympiad. Although many students may prepare, explore, learn, and enjoy the preparation for the Science Olympiad, you will be limited to fifteen students on your team on the day of the Science Olympiad tournament. Most events are organized for two students from each school team to participate—you will select two students to represent your school in the event. You may not send more than one set of two students to participate in any given event unless an exception is published for a certain event(s). Yes, this often means that some students may represent your team in only one or two events.

So generally, how would teams prepare during the summer? Well, for events you know are coming back, assume the rules are going to be the same. If they are an event that rotates topics on a predictable basis (e.g., dynamic), I'd recommend looking at the wiki page for that as a jumping off point. ID events (i.e.

Rocks & Minerals and Invasives), assume the list will look pretty much the same as the last time they were around. Some events you can't really predict all/any of the topics (e.g. Ecology), so just try to get the basics (so in this example, study principles of ecology, and once the rules come out hop on those biomes. Building events can't really be touched until the rules are released in the fall and you know the specifications for the device. For brand spanking new events or events that are coming back into rotation after many years, I'd use trial rules for them. At least for towers, helicopters, wright stuff, bottle rockets, and wind power, you can practice the previous year's rules to improve your building skills.

These cost less money and take less time to do than robot arm or mission possible, as examples. The first design is never your best one, so it won't hurt to make some before the season. Just know that come time for the rules to be released, you will have to alter your design.
